The new school year in Nepal sees our first batch of children begin their SLC or “School Leaving Certificate” exams.

The SLC exam in Nepal is often known as the Iron Gate because once a child gets past it, they have many new opportunities. However, passing the exam is very hard and only around 50% of children manage it.

Starting in July this year, six Himalayan Learning students will undertake the SLC exams:

  1. Asha Chaudari, girl, Tharu, with HL for 3yrs;
  2. Srijana Kumal, girl, Tharu, with HL for 3yrs;
  3. Kumari Lama, girl, Magar, with HL for 3yrs;
  4. Pratima Kafle, girl, Chetri, with HL for 5yrs;
  5. Sujata Bhusal, girl, Brahmin, with HL for 5yrs;
  6. Resham Tiwari, boy, Brahmin, with HL for 2yrs;

Himalayan Learning is aiming to help them as much as possible to pass the exams. All the children will attend private tuition classes outside of school and extra books will be purchased with practice examination papers too. Because school classes are often around 100 children, extra tuition in groups of around five children will allow them to have better access to help from a teacher to improve in their subjects.
