Dalits and minorities

Nepal is a mixture of many different ethnic, cultural and linguistic minorities. Although none of these groups is bigger than 20% of the population, some have faced much more discrimination than others.

Dalits – sometimes called “untouchables” – are the most discriminated against group. Other indigenous minorities, such as Tharu and Magar, also face discrimination.

Himalayan Learning always prioritises support for Dalits and minorities. Most of our sponsored children come from these groups.

We believe in the need to give children role models too, so all of our staff come from Dalit or minority backgrounds.

And we also encourage teachers, schools and communities to recognise and deal with discrimination too. Find our more about Dalits and minorities in Nepal.
